Taco Naco – A Very Nice Place for Tacos (If You Aren’t Driving to KCK)

Takeout Taco Naco, on the grass at a park, after a children’s birthday party kicked us out of our picnic table.

If you want great tacos in Kansas City (authentic, soul-melting tacos), you drive to KCK (Kansas Ave. and adjacent). If you want pretty-nice-to-very-good tacos in Kansas City, your options expand considerably. Congratulations! You can probably eat pretty nice or very good tacos tonight, and only drive 10 minutes to do so! If Taco Republic (next to the original Joes with a satellite in Prairie Village) is a B or B+ taco, and Torchy’s is a firm B+ (and sort of fun and gimmicky) taco, and South of Summit is a B+ taco with A- Oaxacan tlayuda, then you will be happy to know there is a firmly A- taco readily available in North Overland Park – it’s Taco Naco, and this is where I ate tacos tonight.

Pictured are al pastor, cochinita pibil, and mushroom mole tacos. The al pastor appears to be off the spit (certainly tastes like it), and is nicely proportioned with pineapple and an herb aioli. Very good taco. Mushroom mole – it’s a green pumpkin mole, with sweet earthy notes, and again – a very good taco. Cochinita pibil was probably a little over proportioned with the pork (I either want more pickled onion or another fresh ingredient intermingled), but again, a very good taco, especially after adding a pretty bright tomatillo salsa. In short, these are very good tacos and you will enjoy your night if you eat them!

They also sell, in-restaurant, Yucateco hot sauces, which, in my view, are some of the most flavorful mass-produced commercially available hot sauces you’ll actually find in a grocery store or on the shelf at a random taco place. That alone is worth the trip! Go eat some tacos!
